Quick Answers to Your Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

Will waterproofing stop mold and humidity?

It addresses water intrusion, which reduces humidity and mold risk, but you may still need dehumidification and mold remediation if present.

How long do waterproofing solutions last?

Every home is different. Here at Crawls, we tailor our services based upon your needs as a homeowner. With that said, our warranties are based upon said needs. Our warranty system ranges from 5 years to lifetime. Our designer will go over the warranty in detail during the presentation of the system.

What maintenance is needed after waterproofing?

Regular gutter/downspout cleaning, ensure proper grading around the foundation, inspect sump pump and discharge lines, and monitor for signs of new dampness or cracks. We have an optional yearly inspection process. If purchased, we will come out yearly and inspect all the key indicators of elements detrimental to the foundation of your home.

My sump pump stopped working. Can you replace it, or is that too small of a job?

Absolutely! Crawls & Basement Renovations replaces hundreds of sump pumps each year, and no job is too small. Your sump pump is the heart of your home’s water-management system, and when it fails, water damage can happen quickly. We’re happy to repair or replace your sump pump to keep your foundation protected.

Preventing basement flooding often starts with understanding why it happens in the first place. Issues like poor drainage, foundation cracks, sump pump failure, and sewer or septic backflow are among the most common causes of water intrusion.

Quick Answers to Your Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

Does my crawl space affect the air quality in my home?

Yes, in fact due to the stack effect, the Building America Insulation Guide says that “40 % to 50% of the air in a typical home has been in the crawlspace at one time.” As warm air rises and escapes through the upper levels of your home, it naturally pulls air upward from the crawl space. If the crawl space is damp, musty, or contaminated, those conditions can impact the indoor air quality throughout your home.

What are signs you should encapsulate your crawl space?

Indoor allergy symptoms, mold or mildew growth in the crawl space, musty odors in your air ducts (if the system is located under the house), pest infestation, signs of excess moisture in your home, such as sweating windows. https://www.thisoldhouse.com/foundations/crawl-space-encapsulation-cost

What is the cost effectiveness of crawlspace capsulation?

A study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) found that sealing the crawl space access, led to a 32% reduction in heating energy use. American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

Will crawlspace encapsulation affect my home’s insulation?

Yes. It reduces humidity-driven heat loss and can improve overall thermal performance when paired with appropriate insulation.

Why should I encapsulate my crawl space?

Crawl space encapsulation improves the air quality inside your home by sealing the area from outside moisture, pests, and pollutants. Once the crawl space is isolated, we can control the environment more effectively. Encapsulation also provides major benefits such as humidity control, moisture prevention, odor reduction, and protection of your subfloors and structural components.

Do you offer routine maintenance for a crawl space?

Yes. We offer a comprehensive annual maintenance program that includes cleaning the sump pit, testing and cleaning the sump pump, and performing a full inspection of your crawl space or basement. Routine maintenance helps identify potential issues early and ensures your system continues to perform properly.

Should I use a dehumidifier in my crawl space or basement?

Yes. For encapsulated crawl spaces, a dehumidifier is highly recommended to maintain a dry, healthy environment. Most basements also benefit from a quality dehumidifier. Proper humidity control helps eliminate musty odors and protects your subfloors, foundation materials, and other structural components from moisture damage.

With our expert crawl space encapsulation services, you can rest easy knowing your home is protected from moisture, mold, and hidden damage, while improving comfort and energy efficiency year-round.

  • Enhancing overall safety, comfort, and aesthetic appeal of your home

Quick Answers to Your Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

How do you level floors without applying materials on top?

We level floors by adjusting and reinforcing the support system beneath the home (such as piers, beams, and joists) rather than adding materials to the floor surface. This restores the floor to a more level position without altering the finished flooring above.

Will leveling from below affect my existing flooring, doors, or walls?

Because adjustments are made from the support structure underneath, the finished flooring is not removed. However, as the home is brought back toward level, minor changes such as small drywall cracks or door alignment shifts can occur, which is normal in structural leveling work.

How long does structural floor leveling take?

Most structural floor leveling projects can be completed in one to three days, depending on the size of the home, access to the crawl space or basement, and the extent of support adjustments required.

With our expert floor leveling services, you’ll enjoy smooth, stable, and secure floors that protect your home’s foundation while improving comfort and usability throughout your space.

Quick Answers to Your Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

How can I tell if I have a mold problem?

Visible mold or musty odor, water stains, or symptoms like sneezing, coughing, or eye irritation in the affected area. A professional can confirm with tests if needed.

Should I DIY mold remediation?

Not really. Small, non-porous areas (less than 10 square feet) might be manageable, but larger infestations or porous materials require a licensed remediation professional to prevent spread and ensure safety.

Can mold come back after remediation?

Yes. If underlying moisture issues aren’t addressed, mold can return. Moisture problems are often what prompt homeowners to call us in the first place, and during our inspection and remediation process we identify and communicate the moisture-related conditions we observe. This helps homeowners understand what needs to be corrected (such as leaks, ventilation issues, or excess humidity) so they can take the appropriate steps to reduce the risk of recurrence.

Trust Crawls & Basement Renovations to deliver effective mold remediation that keeps your home safe, clean, and free from harmful moisture issues.

What is an egress window?

An egress window is a window large enough to provide a safe exit in case of emergency, typically required for bedrooms and basements in many building codes.

What is the minimum size for an egress window?

In Brazil, Indiana, egress windows must meet Indiana Residential Code requirements, which generally follow the IRC. Most codes require a clear opening of at least 5.7 square feet (0.53 m²) for ground-level rooms and 5.0 square feet (0.46 m²) for below-grade rooms, with minimum dimensions of 20 inches (51 cm) wide and 24 inches (61 cm) high, and a maximum sill height of 44 inches (112 cm). Below-grade windows must have a window well at least 36 inches (91 cm) wide and projecting 36 inches (91 cm) with a minimum 9 square feet (0.84 m²) area, and wells deeper than 44 inches (112 cm) require a permanently affixed ladder or steps. All windows must be operable from the inside without tools or special knowledge, and any bars or grilles must be removable from the inside. Indiana Residential Code, 675 IAC 13-3-1, Sec. R310 (Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings).

What are common pitfalls to avoid with egress windows?

Oversized sill height, not meeting minimum opening area, obstructed window wells, non-operable windows, inadequate escape access, and ignoring permit/code requirements.
